The role offers the opportunity to further experience across multiple areas of project development in the field of development cooperation and more specifically in the areas of interaction between climate change and end users. The ideal candidate will be proactive, committed, flexible, adaptive and a quick learner. He/she will also effectively coordinate a small team and monitor progress and strategy implementation, and will communicate and interact on a regular basis with international partners and relevant stakeholders.
The Role
The Business Development Specialist role entails coordinating the bid and fundraising proposal portfolio with international donor partners and organizations (WB, EU, IADB, ADB, UNDP, and others etc.). The goal will be identifying and selecting strategic business opportunities, coordinating the preparation of proposals, formulating and writing winning proposals, overseeing the quality of OIKO’s Proposals portfolio, Expressions of Interest, and applications in the pipeline, over their entire course of development: opportunity search and identification, prioritization of market strategic areas, team recruitment, methodology/approach creation, budgeting, proposal submission, and follow-up.
The Business Development Specialist will be responsible for leading the regional business strategy and portfolio, leading a small Business Development Unit for the region assigned, from our office, supervising the smooth implementation, and functioning of the OIKO Business Development team (around 3 people) and operational tools, communication with donor partners and international organizations, reporting to directors and coordinating with the OIKO Team members the development of key project opportunities and applications.
The role involves leading, drafting, coordinating, supervising project proposal and the relationship with clients, and representing OIKO with development partners. In addition, you will also be responsible of overseeing, developing, and implementing OIKO’s Business Strategies to further OIKO’s reach and efficiency in key regions and sectors.
Lastly, the Business Development Specialist will also work in close collaboration with the Project Management Unit, both regarding the implementation of the drafted Project proposals and the Business Strategies, as well as regarding the support and overview of the Project Management Unit.
Responsibilities
- Research, identify, select, develop and monitoring of OIKO Project opportunities. Overseeing all activities, tasks, and submission documents.
- Supervision of Liaison with all project stakeholders, expert team members and local partners to ensure the smooth development and timely submission of all application documents.
- Supervision and Liaison with potential strategic partners, experts, institutions, and clients to ensure the integrity of the project opportunity.
- Managing project risks, including the development of contingency plans.
- Designing, developing, and applying appropriate management tools (organizational charts, budgets, planning documents, etc.) for the assigned region.
- Monitor progress of portfolio pipelines, ensuring quality control of proposals, meeting deadlines, communicating with clients.
- Preparing, managing, and overseeing the projects’ budget (Financial Proposal), and outlining the project’s tentative balance of payments.
- Adopting and applying appropriate technical and quality strategies and standards. Monitoring overall progress and use of resources, initiating corrective action where necessary.
- Identifying and obtaining support and advice required for the development of the opportunity.
- Reporting to clients and donors on opportunity development progress to ensure quality control. Conducting a submission review to assess quality of ongoing and past submissions.
- Supporting and collaborating with the Project Management Unit.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a master’s degree.
- Minimum of 5 years of Business Development, Business Strategy Development or related job experience in development cooperation, with international organizations (WB, IADB, ADB, UNDP, GIZ, EU, etc) and the international development cooperation sector.
- Experience and success rate in market research, fundraising and proposal and bid resource coordination and preparations for international organizations (World Bank, UNDP, European Union, etc.) and/or private donors.
- Excellent Professional, communication and writing skills in English and Spanish and/or French.
- Capacity to coordinate and supervise a team of 3/5 young professionals.
- Excellent organisational, managerial, and planning skills.
- Preferably: experience in the climate change sectors (mitigation, renewables / adaptation, agriculture, rural development, climate finance, natural resources, circular economy, etc.).
- Experience in budgeting, knowledgeable on the use of Excel and budgeting tools.
- Good professional network of partners, able to effectively communicate (both oral and written) with all stakeholders in proposal preparation. Able to establish partnerships and widen OIKO’s networks of experts and partners.
- Excellent knowledge of base digital tools: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or similar suite; email communication; internet research and data sourcing.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, committed, flexible, adaptive and a quick learner, with organizational, analytical, leadership and strategic skills, and must have at least four years of professional working experience with international cooperation agencies, as a Researcher/Consultant/Project Manager of relevant project/s, preferably related to climate change adaptation/mitigation, climate finance, circular economy and related topics from either private, public, or not-for profit sector.
The Role
The Research Analyst/Project Manager will be responsible for supporting the Senior Climate Finance Expert and the Head of the Project Management Unit with drafting technical reports on topics related -but not exclusively- to climate finance (50 % of the workload). The scope of the consultancy projects relates to climate change adaptation and mitigation, resources mobilization for climate finance, cost-benefit analysis, design of financial strategies, circular economy among others. Besides desk review, report writing, and quality control, the Research Analyst/Project Manager will support the Senior expert with organization of meeting, conducting interviews and supporting the coordination of teams.
The Research Analyst/Project Manager will be further responsible for coordinating and implementing climate change and climate service application projects in French speaking developing countries (mainly African region), within the decided-upon budget, timeline, and scope. He/she will also effectively monitor progress and implementation and communicate and interact on a regular basis with the team members, international partners, and relevant stakeholders, as well as internal OIKO project team members. Initially, the workload might require 50% of time dedicated to Project Management, and 50 % of time dedicated to Research.
The Research Analyst/Project Manager will also contribute, if requested, to additional tasks of the Project Management and Business Development Units, such as methodology writing for ongoing bids.
Responsibilities
- Drafting quality technical reports on climate finance, sustainability, climate change adaptation/mitigation.
- Conducting desk review and applying quantitative and qualitative research methods.
- Managing international cooperation projects in the area of climate change adaptation/ mitigation, innovation and technology transfer, circular economy and other areas mainly in the African region (French speaking countries).
- Monitoring the budget, workplan, and timely delivery of the deliverables within the standards required by the client.
- Leading the project team throughout all the project cycle, from the project inception, project implementation and project closure.
- Assure effective and pro-active communication with the project team, the client, the government, and the key stakeholders.
- Preparing and manage agendas, facilitate meeting and workshops.
- Drafting of inception, progress, and closure reports.
- Applying problem-solving skills: critical thinking, decision-making, creativity, and information processing.
- Provide support to the Business Development Unit in the preparation of Expression of Interests and Project Technical and Financial Proposals.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant professional working experience as a Researcher/Consultant/Project Manager, preferably from international working environment and international development field.
- Strong communications skills (ability to speak in a public and facilitate meetings).
- Experience of managing teams.
- Problem-solving skills, proactive attitude, and cultural sensitivity.
- Passion about research on climate change and sustainable development.
- Willingness to constantly learn new skills, adapt to new environments, and apply them to the Project Management process.
- Excellent verbal and written skills in English (C1 minimum).
- IT skills, including Microsoft Office 365, spreadsheets, document styling, internet-based tools, and videoconferencing.
- Knowledge of Spanish and/or French is a plus.

The Young Professionals Training Program at OIKO entails a 6-months onsite internship at our office in Palma de Mallorca.
The participants will be working in the field of international development and more specifically in finding solutions for adaptation measures and mitigation actions to climate change in climate vulnerable countries.
The trainee will first receive training and then will be monitored by our staff to work on-the-job with an international network of climate scientists, researchers, and practitioners.
