Green technologies and food security in Cameroon

Lack of economic growth, food insecurity and environmental degradation are pressing challenges in the Far North Region of Cameroon, where OIKO is working along with the University of Maroua and the Center for Technology Network to provide sustainable and innovative solutions for the dairy sector in the communes of Wina and Petté.

During the last few years, the Far North Region of Cameroon has experienced less and more erratic rain, and higher average temperatures, phenomena that negatively impact the food security of its inhabitants. “Our main fear is that it is increasingly challenging to find pasture and our cows are not adapting to the constantly changing climate. We feed them appropriately, but their milk production keeps diminishing year after year,” affirms one of the several farmers, herdsmen, collectors, transformers, and producers of the dairy sector, many of them women, participating in the project.

Considered the poorest region in the country, with 74.3% of its population living under the poverty threshold, the Far North Region of Cameroon is part of the 2018 – 2030 United Nations Support Plan for the Sahel, which frames OIKO´s efforts and seeks to promote peace and sustainable growth through the pursuit of a series of priorities which include building resilience to climate change and decreasing natural resource scarcity, malnutrition, and food insecurity.

Cameroon is one of the countries with the lowest production and consumption of milk per capita in the world, milk production represents only 45% of its potential. Hence the opportunity “to develop an integrated Water-Energy-Livestock implementation plan for the dairy sector that adapts to the local patterns of development while taking into consideration Cameroon’s Far North cultural features and socio-economic challenges, where women and young children become actors of change,” as explains Nyore Nyore from the University of Maroua.

Storing energy generated by solar panels that could be used in the form of refrigeration units to boost the local dairy sector, while fighting the negative effects of climate change in northern Cameroon and working towards achieving food security in the region exemplifies OIKO’s commitment and embodies its principles.

We are currently carrying out the workshop to build the capacities of key national stakeholders to implement National awareness campaigns in Caribbean countries. This workshop is part of a project overseen by CCCCC on “Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) survey related to Climate Variability and Change, and development of awareness strategy”. The project is funded by the EU under the Intra-ACP GCCA+ Alliance.

We thank the University of West indies St. Augustin Campus, and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) that is hosting and coordinating the event on their online platforms.

We currently have more than 100 people online registered for training.

Oiko Logica in the Mediterranean with UNEP

The Mediterranean Sea region has become a climate change hotspot, meaning that it will suffer multiple stresses and systemic failures due to climate changes. That’s what emerged from the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) released in 2013. It estimated an increase in surface mean air temperature of 2-4oC, 10-20% decreases in mean annual precipitation, increased risk of desertification, soil degradation, changes in species composition, etc., thus foreseeing serious losses on agricultural and forests production.

As a response, “The Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean” (Barcelona Convention) released the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Framework (RCCAF) at the 19th Meeting of the Contracting Parties in February 2016, urging for action.

Under this framework, the project aims to support UNEP/MAP in the preparation of the project document for the project ‘Enhancing regional climate change adaptation in the Mediterranean Marine and Coastal Areas’, funded by the GEF-Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF).

OIKO LOGICA is extremely pleased to be supporting UNEP/MAP in this important project. In fact, our work will provide a great help to the Mediterranean Regions in facing the challenges of climate change adaptation, especially in the marine and coastal environment.

In OIKO LOGICA we are proud of our extensive and unique experience in Lesotho, since 2010 we have been working and supporting this outstanding landlocked country, with such particular needs and features.

Lesotho is a kingdom, dominated by traditional chiefdoms. For more than two consecutive years, the Government of Lesotho has declared emergency on food, due to El Niño induced drought, which impacted on agriculture production and food security. OIKO LOGICA will contribute to reduce the pressure of resources through a field evaluation of the project “Improving living conditions and position of the Lesotho smallholder farmers in society through lobbying and advocacy and capacity building”. The project is implemented by Rural Self-help Development Association(RSDA) in partnership with Denmark Lesotho Network (DLN).

The purpose of the external evaluation is to assess the effectiveness, relevance, performance and overall potential sustainability of RSDA actions to reduce poverty and malnutrition and to provide a set of recommendations to steer implementation towards the expected result.

Great news! We have been awarded the GEF-GoSL project in Saint Lucia!

We will be conducting an Ecosystem Services Valuation project within the beautiful Iyanola region, the North-East coast of the tropical Caribbean Island. In a consortium with the local partner, Palm Integrated Services and Solutions Ltd. we will be analyzing and identifying mechanisms and measures to integrate the values of biodiversity into relevant national and local policies.

St. Lucia has a tropical climate strongly influenced by its broken, rugged topography. Rainfall increases and temperature decreases with altitude, and the western side of the island experiences higher rainfall. The island experiences distinct rainy and dry seasons. The assigned Consortium and proposed team combine local and international experience with proven methodology.

The overall objective of this project is to deliver an Ecosystems Services Valuation (ESV) of the natural resources within the region. OIKO LOGICA will mobilize a multicultural and multi-skilled team with a broad experience in Ecosystem Services Valuation, with the aim to preserving biodiversity and to raise awareness on the huge economic value of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

Since 2015, OIKO LOGICA has been awarded a membership in the UNIDO Climate Technology Center & Network. In 2017 we have been awarded the UNIDO/CTCN – “Designing a Standard Protocol to mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation in local government Land Use Plans in Costa Rica”.

In consortium with Ecoplan, a local consulting firm specialized in Land Management Plans, Coastal Regulatory Plans and Management Plans.

A multi-disciplinary team of 8 experts is providing technical assistance to Secretaría Técnica Nacional Ambiental (SETENA), to create a standard operational Protocol to mainstream climate change into municipal strategic planning documents. The Protocol will guide the inclusion of climate change adaptation measures into land use planning through a participative process with the institutions, the academic community and other relevant stakeholders. The expected outcome is Technical Operational Guideline and a GIS software decision making tool to effectively enable the local institutions to introduce the environmental variable in land use plans.

The CTCN – Climate Technology Centre & Network, provides technical assistance all over the globe in accelerated transfer of environmentally sound technologies for low carbon and climate resilient development at the request of developing countries. The CTCN is the operational arm of the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism, hosted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

OIKO LOGICA was invited to be an active Member of the CTCN Network since 2015 and has been invited to collaborate directly with the CTCN in several countries since then (Madagascar, Costa Rica, etc).

A team of experts from OIKO LOGICA has completed an evaluation of the National Center for Environmental Technologies (Centro de Tecnología Ambiental de Perú). The German Cooperation Agency (GIZ) has sent our consortium ECI-OIKOLOGICA to complete an assessment of the different support programs in Latin America coordinated by the Regional Fund for South-South Cooperation.

The National Center for Environmental Technology is a leader in the science of human health and ecological risk assessment, a process used to determine how pollutants or other stressors may impact human health and the environment.

The center occupies a critical position generating new findings and data and the regulators in Environmental Protection programs and regional offices who must make regulatory, enforcement, and remedial action decisions.

CTA addresses the needs of stakeholders by preparing technical reports and assessments that integrate and evaluate the most up-to-date research. These products serve as a major component of the scientific foundation supporting regulations and policies. CTA also conducts cutting-edge research to develop innovative quantitative risk assessment methods and tools that help extrapolate between experimental data and real-world scenarios, improve our understanding of uncertainties, and facilitate careful weighing of evidence.

People think that climate change is about costal destruction, temperature, poor households being affected by cyclone and floods, etc. which is right! But the only way to PREVENT this from happening is providing insurance for farmers, funding for innovative energy financing in non commercial setting and other basket funds and financial arrangements which are NOT supported by commercial traditional banks.
